The team went a perfect 12-0 that season and won the Sugar Bowl. During his long tenure with Georgia that lasted until 1988, Dooley is best known for leading the Bulldogs to a college football national title in 1980. Vince Dooley took over the reins as head coach in 1964 and led the team to the Sun Bowl in his first season. 3 in the nation in the final Associated Press Top 25. In 1946, the Bulldogs posted a perfect 11-0 mark with a victory in that season’s Sugar Bowl. That marked a turning point in the program as a national power. With Wallace Butts as head coach, Georgia went 9-1-1 in 1941 followed by an 11-1 record the next season. The first season of play was in 1933 with the Bulldogs going 8-2 that season. The SEC dates back to 1932 with the Georgia Bulldogs as a charter member. From 1921 through the 1932 season, Georgia was a member of the Southern Conference. Until 1921, the team played as an Independent ahead of formal conferences in the nation.
